Age suitability

Photo Stream Assistant is rated 18+ on the Mac App Store. It is a client for a Flickr account: it shows the signed-in user their own photos, the photos of people they follow, and Flickr's public pool. Because that pool is other people's photography, the app declares that mature themes and non-explicit nudity can appear, and it is rated accordingly. It never shows explicit material, and it creates, hosts and publishes nothing of its own.

What can appear on screen, and by whose choice

• Your own library. Your photos, as you uploaded them to Flickr. The app does not filter your own content; it is yours.
• Your favourites. Photos you chose to favourite on Flickr. Not filtered, for the same reason.
• My Feed. The latest photos from people you follow. Always requested with Flickr's Safe filter. This screen is not the app's first screen; the app opens on your own dashboard.
• Search & Explore. Flickr's public pool. Every visit starts at Flickr's Safe level. A signed-in adult may raise it to Flickr's Moderate level for a single search, which Flickr defines as content that may include partial nudity. The choice is never remembered between visits. Flickr's Restricted level is not offered.

What never appears

• Explicit sexual content. The app does not request Flickr's Restricted level from any screen, and Flickr's own filter withholds that content at the levels the app does request.
• Content from anyone you did not choose. There is no discovery feed of strangers' photos on launch, no recommendations, and no advertising.
• Anything the app itself hosts. There is no upload to our servers, no comments, no messaging, and no way to publish through the app. It reads and edits a Flickr account through Flickr's official API, and nothing else.

How the filtering works, and its limits

The filter is Flickr's own: SafeSearch acts on the safety level that owners and moderators have set on each photo. It is as good as Flickr's moderation and no better. A photo that has not been flagged on Flickr is treated by Flickr as safe, and the app has no independent view of the image. Anyone can report a photo to Flickr from the photo's own page on flickr.com, which the app links to.

Accounts and children

The app creates no accounts. It requires a Flickr account, and Flickr's own terms set the minimum age for one. Flickr's account settings also carry a SafeSearch preference that applies on flickr.com; the app's filter applies inside the app, in addition to it, and never below Safe.
